Frequently Asked Questions
---- Where are you located?
My office is located at: 147 Bell Street, Suite 103 in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
----How do I schedule an appointment?
Please contact me either by phone, 330.348.4000 or by email: joan@mychristiancounsel.com in order to arrange a private confidential meeting.
----What hour/days are you available for meeting?
I do not have specific office hours but rather schedule appointments at times which are convenient for my clients.
----What are your areas of expertise?
I specialize in marriage and family relationships as well as personal issues, including but not limited to problems stemming from past or present failures, wounds, insecurity or fears.
----How would you summarize your counseling philosophy?
In order to have successful relationships there has to be a solid foundational understanding of inter-relational skills such as communication, respect, humility and personal responsibility. I utilize the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and if my clients are willing, I incorporate Biblical concepts such as love, forgiveness and grace. I genuinely believe that listening to the Lord and allowing Him to guide us through personal issues can help us to discover the path to recovery and resolution.
----Do you have any areas of specialized training?
I have specialized training in managing and understanding panic attacks and the resulting anxiety that occurs from those attacks. I am certified in advanced formational prayer which enables me to help people learn how to connect with God through prayer. Learning how to pray and taking the time to "listen" to God is a life changing experience and one which allows you to have a truely intimate and personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
----If I have a marital problem does my spouse need to be with me?
I am happy to meet with you alone, however it would be advisable to meet with your spouse at a later date. Ideally, I like to meet at some time with each person alone and then have joint sessions. Inasmuch as it is a marriage, it is generally most beneficial to have couples work together in order to understand one another's position and to ultimately find meaningful ways to reconcile.
----How often do we have to meet?
That depends on your particular situation. We will discuss various options during our first session and ultimately, you will determine what works best for your personal lifestyle and circumstances.
----Will my information be shared with anyone
Whatever we discuss will be strictly confidential.
----Are you licensed?
The Pastoral Counseling master's degree program offered at Ashland Seminary focuses on Christian counseling, prayer and theology. I am NOT a licensed clinical counselor therefore if circumstances arise which fall beyond my scope of care or practice, you will be given a referral.
